Dose Differences: Eating Isn’t the Same as Inhaling! by Auntie Dolores

browniesWhen you smoke or vaporize your medical cannabis, you inhale cannabinoids like Delta-9-THC which move through the lung’s alveoli into your bloodstream. The effect of inhaled cannabinoids is felt within seconds; the benefits of inhaled cannabinoids can last for around 3 hours and reaches a peak potency within 30 minutes after initial exposure.

Eating cannabinoids is a dramatically different experience! Instead of an immediate onset, ingested cannabinoids can take up to 90 minutes to take effect; when you swallow an Auntie Dolores Savory Pretzel, for example, the active cannabinoid Delta-9-THC travels through the stomach and into the liver, where it is converted into 11-Hydroxy-THC.

11-Hydroxy-THC is said to be 9-10 times more psychoactive than Delta-9-THC. This means that a single Auntie Dolores Savory Pretzel, which contains about 3mg of Delta-9-THC, will feel more like 18mg of inhaled THC when it begins to take effect.

When eating cannabis, you can expect a much longer experience: many patients reportpretzels therapeutic effects lasting well over 8 hours! This means a dose of ingested cannabis is more potent and longer-lasting than an inhaled dose of similar size.

With edibles, it’s important to consume a small initial dose to gain a better understanding on how any given product is going to affect you. Typically, Auntie Dolores recommends consuming a small sample of the brownie or a small amount of your savory choice; after consuming your initial dose, wait an hour before deciding if you need more to reach your desired result. You can always eat more if necessary – don’t get carried away with your first edible dose!

auntiedoloresupg3One other thing to note about the difference between Eating vs. Inhaling your cannabinoids is the process of decarboxylation. To put it simply, THC cannot intoxicate you unless it is decarboxylated: this process happens when the raw plant material is exposed to heat. Both temperature and time of exposure matter for effective decarboxylation: generally, the heat of your vaporizer or lighter is enough to decarboxylate all of the cannabinoids into their active forms (like THC turning into Delta-9-THC).

If you ate raw cannabis flowers, you would not get intoxicated or euphoric: the medicalindex benefits of raw cannabinoids like THC – or THC Acid (THCA) – are documented, but some patients enjoy the euphoric sensation associated with doses of THC. With that in mind, if you don’t want the euphoric sensation, try consuming raw cannabis to experience a dose of cannabinoid acids (like THCA or CBDA). If you’re eating a new edible – determine whether or not the extract contained within has been decarboxylated. This is a very important detail and will help you find your safest and most effective dose.
